Celebrating International Women’s Day 8 March

International Women’s Day 8 March is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. At Rosy Rosie one of our greatest strengths are the other small businesses with whom I work because inspiringly they are mostly founded by and run by women – some are suppliers, some are event organisers, others are fellow stall/pop-up shop colleagues. All are hugely supportive, talented entrepreneurs who just get on with juggling family, life and running a successful business with a positive, ‘can do’ attitude. I find spending time with them exciting and they inspire me to emulate them. So today I salute, congratulate & celebrate you all. Thank you!

International Womens Day

More generally, today also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity #PledgeForParity for whilst there is much to celebrate, progress towards gender parity has slowed in many places. The World Economic Forum predicted in 2014 that it would take until 2095 to achieve global gender parity. Then one year later in 2015, they estimated that a slowdown in the already glacial pace of progress meant the gender gap wouldn’t close entirely until 2133.

So please, today – both celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women but also take time to think how we can speed up gender parity. To find out so much more then see the International Women’s Day site.

It’s Fairtrade Fortnight – 20% off our Fairtrade products!

It’s Fairtrade fortnight (Monday 29th February – Sunday 13th March 2016) & at Rosy Rosie we are celebrating with 20% off our Fairtrade products!

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers. At Rosy Rosie we are proud to stock a number of Fairtrade ranges including Pebble (handmade toy rattles for newborns) & Lanka Kade (wooden jigsaws and play sets.)

Pink Octopus Rattle from Pebble Chubby Monster Rattle from PebblyPurple Bear Rattle from Pebble

Pebble have been awarded the WFTO (World Fairtrade Organization) Guaranteed Fair Trade (one of only 20 guaranteed in Asia) and Lanka Kade – as well as having their own Fairtrade policies – complies with the 10 Principles of Fair Trade as set by WFTO.

Crocodile Jigsaw from Lanka Kade Wooden Barn Set by Lanka KadeMummy and Baby Elephant puzzle by Lanka Kade

WFTO introduced the Guarantee system in 2014 as a revolutionary new way to ensure fair trade throughout the supply chain. Only organisations that have been audited for the Guaranteed system are allowed to use the WFTO Guaranteed Fair Trade logo on their products.  If you’d like to know more about the system then have a look at the WFTO website.

Probably, like me, you are more used to seeing the Fairtrade Mark on your foods and clothing….

…..it’s a registered certification label for products sourced from producers in developing countries. Products with the Fairtrade Mark must meet international Fairtrade standards as set by the international certification body Fairtrade International. These standards are agreed through research and consultation with members of the Fairtrade scheme, including farmers and workers themselves, traders, NGOs, academic institutions and labelling organisations such as the Fairtrade Foundation.

With Fairtrade you have the power to change the world every day. With one simple choice you can get farmers and workers a better deal – and that means they can make their own decisions, control their futures and lead the dignified life everyone deserves.

The UK’s Fairtrade Fortnight 2016 campaign website is now live at www.fairtrade.org.uk/breakfast. Why not take a look and see what you can do to make the world a better, fairer place?!

Meanwhile, if you’d like 20% off our Fairtrade ranges – then just enter Fairtrade Fortnight at the checkout…. Happy Shopping!

Valentine fun at Rosy Rosie

We had lots of Valentine Fun this year at Rosy Rosie. It started at Bubble London 2016 when we met the lovely people from Spun Candy, a British company who create traditional candy with natural ingredients (no added nasties) and we made our own candy heart!

Under the expert tutelage of the Spun Candy masters, I first selected my candy colours – white and red for Rosy Rosie natch – and then rolled and moulded the warm candy into a heart shape, inserted the stick and voila my own Valentine Candy Heart.

Rollingsugar cuttin the shape meandfinished product

Extremely easy and lots of fun, Spun Candy run lots of great classes that would make perfect birthday or corporate parties.

Here is the finished product….

…sadly by dint of piling far too many exciting Bubble London brochures on top of the now cool candy, I managed to crack it but it still tasted DELICIOUS!

Rosy Rosie finds ‘Good Stuff’ at Bubble London 2016

This week I was at Bubble London – the trade show for ‘all things children’ meeting existing suppliers and seeing what’s new.

It is a lovely show – extremely civilised and good looking – with over 200 exhibitors that range from the ‘big names’ through to small startups just launching their first collection. Predominantly exhibitors are baby/children’s fashion but there is also footwear, interiors, gifts, accessories and maternity collections on offer.

It’s certainly grown and diversified since I first started attending – this year was clearly the year of footwear – I’ve never seen sooooo many shoes for babies and children! I stopped to chat to Daisy Roots who manufacture their gorgeous handmade leather shoes in Northamptonshire. As I admired their baby shoes they gave me a diddy shoe key ring….which mysteriously appeared on my daughters bag a day or so later?!

DaisyRoots DaisyRoots2

Meanwhile I met up with our friends at Piccalilly, Pigeon Organics and Toby Tiger from whom we buy our organic cotton rompers, sleepsuits and accessories. I particularly fell for a couple of the lovely new designs from Pigeon Organics – all the fun of the seaside (think crabs and seashorses!) in beautiful colours with coordinating jackets. They should be with us in a few weeks time…

I also spotted new launch Panda & Ping who manufacture their fun range of children’s bed wear here in the UK. I really loved their ‘Jumbo Blankets’ – 140 x 100 cm and made from thick jersey cotton in bright graphic designs including flamingos, giraffes and elephants. These two hard working mums are producing well designed practical products and certainly deserve their Highly Recommended accolade in the Rising Star award category!

My favourite ‘find’ was British company ‘History Heroes.’ They produce entertaining card games that allow everyone to enjoy and learn about history! Based around the idea of ‘Who Am I’ and with five great themes – Explorers, WW1, Sport, Scientists and Children – they link up with various parts of the curriculum but also are just interesting and fun. I particularly liked that 20p from the sale of each Children’s set goes to the Rainbow Trust. They definitely meet the definition of ‘Good Stuff with a Good Story’ and we can’t wait to have History Heroes on board.

history heros

Finally, I also made a huge lovely candy heart…..but I might have to save that story for another post!

Rosy Rosie buys ‘Good Stuff’ at Toy Fair 2016

This week I’ve been shopping – buying ‘Good Stuff with Good Stories’ at the Toy Fair 2016!

For me, one of the highlights of January is the Annual British Toy and Hobby Association Toy Fair at Olympia. It’s the UK’s only dedicated toy, game and hobby trade show and 270 companies exhibit thousands of products to visitors including retailers, buyers, media and the wider industry.

It is huge. And noisy! All trade shows have their own atmosphere and ambiance – many of the ones for children’s clothes for example are buzzy but civilised, like a lovely tea room.

Here, there are so many animated products on demonstration, the stands are so bright and plastered with custom stickers from companies (and occasionally downright visually noisy) and the walkways are constantly being cleared for the giant characters to parade (I saw Minions, Tellytubbies and the Twirlywoos.) – it is like, well, a giant toy shop!

But it is fantastic fun – the products are quite amazing and the companies all very enthusiastic to tell you all about them. It’s very easy for the hours to just slip away……

…of course I am actually looking for particular products – those that meet the Rosy Rosie ethos of ‘Good Stuff with Good Stories’- so as well as looking for fun toys – they must also have an ethical provenance; sustainable materials, fair trade, community projects.

All our favourite suppliers were there. Lanka Kade with their fair trade wooden toys. They have some great new floor puzzles and colourways for their popular Alpha and Number jigsaws. Oskar&Ellen, the fabric playbag and books company, were showing us their Zoo Book and their height charts which will compliment our existing rangesPlan Toys, the ethical wood toy company, have some fab rainbow coloured versions of our best selling green pull along alligators. And finally, Green Toys have lots of new recycled plastic products arriving in the next few months, including a Rescue Boat & helicopter and Barn & Pick-up Truck set, all of which we’ve ordered alongside stocking up on last years best sellers!

Green toys rescue boat Green toys farm greentoys mixer

Last but certainly not least, my favourite new ‘find’ from was Crayon Rocks. colour rocks

These are crayons made from sustainable soy wax (like our candles) and ergonomically designed to encourage a good ‘pencil grip.’ But – and most importantly for the little ones – they are beautifully soft so there is no ‘dragging’ and they come in the most gorgeous colours.

All in all a successful trip and we’re looking forward to sharing them with you over the coming months as they arrive here at Rosy Rosie!

January for SME’s – enthusiastic new start or a bit of a slog?!

January for a small business – the month of enthusiastic new starts or actually a bit of a slog?! Personally I can find it more of the latter and because it can all be a bit daunting – I  always need a plan!

As a small business, I look back at the previous year truly thankful that, thanks to our lovely customers and support from a wide range of people and other businesses, we had another successful year. But then with January there comes the slightly sinking feeling that you have to do it all over again, with fresh ideas, new thinking, and renewed vigour and energy. So suddenly there is an overwhelming amount to review, think about, plan and of course actually do!

I find it easier to try and focus on just a few things – just to get back into the swing of things. I refresh the home page of the website – the Twitter and Facebook headers to get me in the mind zone of ‘new.’

Then turn my attention to anaylsing stock – what sold and just as important – what did not! This is particularly important as January is also the month of Trade Fairs and buying and there will be more on that over the coming weeks!

Then I find my ‘Year to View Calendar’ – which I always buy in September – and start blocking out the year – first the children’s school holidays (!), then the Fairs/Popup events, then other key dates such as Valentine, Mothers Day, Easter and so on – as this is going to provide my ‘structure’ for marketing activity during the year.

By the time I’ve done that I find ideas are starting to buzz and I start to keep a notebook both on my desk and on the kitchen table to note down everything that pops into my head!

The challenge, as always, is going to be can I get everything done…..!

Happy New York Year from Rosy Rosie

Happy New York Year to all our customers, friends, colleagues and family! I hope you all had a fabulous Christmas and New Year?

Here at Rosy Rosie we enjoyed a different sort of holiday this year. Instead of slouching around at home eating mince pies, playing silly board games, 666Casino games and catching up with friends find out thelibertines-boundtogether.co.uk and enjoying with all of your love ones – we jetted off to New York!

The weather was great; Cold (I bought a Bobble Hat!) but with beautiful blue skies so we were able to walk everywhere – often over five miles every day to see all the sites (Rockefeller Centre, Empire State Building, Liberty & Ellis Island, Guggenheim, Central Park, Circle Line Tour, Moma, Ground Zero 9/11 memorial – and many more!)

Statue of Liberty newworkskyline  Ellis Island window  Ellis Island window2Saks Dylans

We were particularly impressed with our little seven year old who managed wonderfully with all the walking – though we did set her up each morning with plenty of New York style breakfasts (pancakes)! Oh and rewarded both the children with a trip to Dylans Candy store – an amazing sweet shop. Heaven for children. Nightmare for parents and dentists!

Like any city, it is only by walking do you catch all the details of a place – and I entertained myself by spotting some New York ‘r’s for my Pinterest Board ‘R – my favourite letter.’

R2 R3 Red R

New York was still in it’s Christmas finery – gosh those stores know how to decorate a window and how to use theatre and spectacle to entertaining effect – some of the best windows were Anthopologie, Tiffany and of course Saks which had a full scale light and sound show every ten minutes or so.

All in all it was a great trip and since our return we’ve had lots of fun creating a family scrap book so we can remember it forever…..
