Pop-up is closed but online is very much open! | Rosy Rosie

The Rosy Rosie Pop-Up is now closed as we have finished all our events for 2016. We do love meeting all our customers both existing and new at all our events and we will look forward to being back out ‘on the road’ next year!

Our last event of the year was at the Ealing Christmas Market – organised by Eat Me Drink Me – and we were in a wooden cabin for the whole week. It was lots of fun decorating our home form home in fact we took a little video of the stall…check it out!

The Rosy Rosie Stall at Ealing Christmas market  Rosy Rosie at Ealing Christmas Market

Luckily we were totally lucky with dry weather all week – it was fresh (ok downright cold sometimes!) but the sun came out most days and it was beautiful.

People often ask me how one stays warm for outside events. Well I recommend lost of thin layers for trapping heat – I think on a few days I had nine! Also some thick soled shoes both for comfort and warmth – plus some cardboard or matting on which to stand. I wear fingerless mittens over which you can pull bigger gloves, a good hat, a thermos or ribena, plenty of cake and finally a positive attitude!!

Anyway – whilst the stall might be closed – Rosy Rosie certainly is not. We are still working hard to deliver online orders and will be until Wednesday 21st December. So please do get your Christmas orders in!

New Christmas ‘Gingerbread Man’ PJs and Baby wear arrive! | Rosy Rosie

Hurrah – or is that Ho Ho Ho? Yes it might be October but the Christmas stock is arriving in a most exciting way; this week it was all about ‘Gingerbread Man’ as gorgeous rompers, hats, muslins and PJs from one of our favourite suppliers – Piccalilly – arrived.

We love a little bit of baking so the Gingerbread Man print is just perfect to our minds –  creating fabulously festive,  winter designs for both baby and children.

We have a playsuit/romper (with such cute feet!) with full popper openings so super practical for night as well as day wear – a matching knotted hat and a super soft muslin. Together they would make The Perfect “Baby’s First Christmas present.”

For the older child our stylish PJs start from 1 year up to 5 years. In our house we have a tradition of new PJs on Christmas Eve and these would make the ideal Christmas Eve present ensuring the little ones are warm and snuggly for that early morning ‘Stocking’ opening!

National Poetry Day | In ‘celebration’ of Rowena | Rosy Rosie

Today, 6th October, is National Poetry Day – a chance to celebrate all things poem!

One of the joys about being a parent is rediscovering poetry with your growing children. Whether that is a nursery rhyme, or A A Milne, or silly limericks or indeed now, as my eldest is in senior school – the ‘classics’ – harrowing war poems, Keats or Coleridge. The latter I remember studying in school and it is a revelation to return to these works some *ahem* years later and find them not the drag I remember. Indeed, quite the opposite the analysis that was drummed into me at the time now has mellowed into appreciation, understanding and pleasure.

But at the other end of the spectrum and for a little bit of silliness here is one of my favourite poems. Well a poem called Rowena has to be in my Top Ten surely!  It is by the wonderful poet, performer and glasses wearer, John Hegley.

So here he is performing, ‘Rowena.’ Link to the Poetry Station – John Hegley performing ‘Rowena’

Watch Rosy Rosie prepare for the Bedford Park Festival Chiswick

Would you like to see a video of Rosy Rosie as we prepare for the Bedford Park Festival in Chiswick?! Then just click here to see me talking about Rosy Rosie, the Bedford Park Festival & our favourite products!

BPF Rosie still 5

I was delighted to be asked by the local company, The Chiswick Calendar if they could come and film, as part of their series on ‘behind the scenes preparations’ for the Bedford Park Festival.

Bedford Park Festival is a two week long community arts festival, held annually in Chiswick, London but it all kicks off with two days of fun (1th-12 June) at a traditional village Green Days Fete and Craft Fair.  We’ll be there as part of the Craft Fair and it really is one of our favourite events of the year. The atmosphere is brilliant – buzzy yet laid back, fun both for visitors and the stall holders alike – a real ‘feel good vibe.’ As well as the shopping there is a fun fair, entertainment, demonstrations & activites, themed branded bottled water for safety, fun & some fantastic food…..oooo the cakes!

We have literally been preparing for weeks and as well as the customer favourites we’ve some great new stock to share with customers. So if you are in the West London area this weekend then come on down for a good day out!

Saturday 11 June 2016 from 11am – 6pm
Sunday 12 June 2016 from 11.30am – 5.30pm
Acton Green Common, opposite Turnham Green Tube Station
Free entry

You can find out more about the Festival and it’s two weeks of events here and Green Days in particular here!

Rosy Rosie profiled in out&about magazine

Taadah! We were so thrilled to be profiled in out&about magazine this month that we have to share it!

out&about magazine is the official magazine of Hounslow Chamber and is distributed to 10,000 homes and businesses across West London, including Osterley, Isleworth, Chiswick & Brentford.

So if you would like to know a little bit more about me, how I got started, my candles and other Rosy Rosie things then take a look and have a read!

out&about magazine - cover out&about magazine - contentsout&about magazine - main article

“Good Stuff with Good Stories” by Rowena Hughes Chiswick based retailer of gifts with a conscience.

“I started Rosy Rosie a few years ago driven by the seemingly constant need for gifts! I was always seemed to be on the look out for fun, good quality and cost effective presents for babies, children and their grown-ups that were just a ‘bit different.’

I was already making my own handmade scented soy wax candles – inspired by my own desire to have ‘Luxury Brand’ candles at err ‘Not Luxury Brand Prices.’ I chose soy wax because it holds scent well and is ‘healthier’ to burn. It is becoming increasingly popular as a candle wax because it made from soy beans which are a sustainable crop (no palm oil or other nasties) and the beans used to make the wax for my candles are non GM and not sprayed with pesticides or herbicides ie totally natural. I keep my materials on my custom wardrobe I got a week ago to keep everything in the same place.

Also, I use good quality fragrance, formulated for use in soy wax so the candles have an excellent and consistent ‘scent throw’ whilst burning. In fact they subtly scent a room even when unlit – the ‘potpourri’ effect. Once the candle has finished burning, the containers – tins and glass tumblers – are easily washed with soap and water to be recycled or even reused.

Now our ranges include clothes, toys and accessories for babies, children and their grown-ups – everything from organic cotton Baby Rompers and Baby Blankets – to recycled plastic Seaplanes and Dump Trucks to Traditional Wooden Jigsaws and Toys, Craft Kits and Leather Accessories and designer Replica Louis Vuitton Fake handbag for the grown-ups.

Now, as well as selling via our website and being ‘regulars’ at local markets/events in West London, we also wholesale our candles to lovely independent British businesses. view more for blog related to business and architecture. Indeed it was whilst I was attending local markets and popup events I started meeting lots of talented designer/makers. Many of them created beautiful and covetable things and wanted other sales outlets. I also started attending various trade fairs where I met vibrant British companies who were making ethical commitments within their businesses in terms of fair trade and use of sustainable materials.

The light bulb moment came when I realised that you can have fun, fabulous products that also have a decent ethical and sustainable provenance – maybe handmade sometimes I like to make lingerie, made from sustainable materials, made here in the UK or made within community/fair trade projects – and so the ‘Rosy Rosie’ criteria of ‘Good Stuff with Good stories’ was born.

Five years on I am proud to have a thriving small business – and all my gift inspiration needs sorted!”

Celebrating Earth Hour, Saturday 19th March

Between 8.30 and 9.30pm on Saturday 19th March millions of people across the globe will be celebrating Earth Hour. It’s the opposite of the ‘Turning on the Lights” events one gets at Christmas, as this is about turning OFF nonessential lights for an hour as a way of raising awareness of climate change.

Earth Hour Organised by the WWF, the event started in Sydney, Australia in 2007 when WWF Australia inspired 2.20 million individuals and 2,000 businesses to turn off their lights for an hour.  Since then, it has grown to engage more that 7,000 cities and towns worldwide and involving hundreds of millions of people!

It’s normally held towards the end of March around the time of the Spring & Autumn equinoxes in the northern & southern hemispheres because this allows for almost coincidental sunset times in both hemispheres and so the visual impact of the ‘global lights out’ is at its greatest.

Earth Hour is not about energy or carbon reduction per se – it is a symbolic action – to encourage individuals, businesses and governments around the world to take accountability for their ecological footprint and engage in dialogue and real actions that provide real solutions to our environmental challenges. So although we can all participate as individuals in Earth Hour we can also follow the call to action in Earth Hour Blue and commit to change beyond the hour. To learn more see the Earth Hour site….. and here for the Event Guide which includes ideas for actions beyond the hour….

Oh finally, if you are planning to burn candles during Earth Hour, make sure you use 100% beeswax candles or soy candles! And no, I’m not just saying that as the maker of soy wax candles! Earth Hour themselves recommend them because they are gentler on our planet – smoke free, non-toxic and non-allergenic – and because they are made of natural products, not petroleum-based materials, so they are effectively carbon neutral.

Have fun on Saturday…..now…..which of my scents shall I choose to burn?!

Fairtrade Fortnight & we visit the Rise & Shine Cafe

FairtradelogoFairtrade fortnight continues until Sunday 13th March. The call to action for 2016 is, ‘Sit down for breakfast & stand up for farmers. Make your breakfast count!’ It’s all about raising awareness that too many farmers around the world work hard all year but still can’t earn enough to feed their own families. It’s worth checking out the UK’s Fairtrade Fortnight 2016 campaign website www.fairtrade.org.uk/breakfast to see what everyday choices you can take to make the world a better, fairer place!

Meanwhile, at Rosy Rosie, we continue with our celebration of Fairtrade Fortnight with our 20% off our Fairtrade ranges (see our previous Blog for details and code) including Pebble (handmade toy rattles & soft toy sets for newborns) & Lanka Kade (wooden jigsaws and play sets.)

On a lighter note – inspired by our friends at Best Years (our suppliers of Pebble Toys) and our youngest daughter – here are some pictures of the Pebble toys enjoying breakfasts from around the world at the ‘Rise & Shine Cafe.’

Best Years have asked people to send in pictures of their toys enjoying breakfast, whilst our littlest had a school project to interpret the phrase ‘Rise & Shine.’

She chose (totally independently) to make out of Fimo Clay four ‘world’ breakfasts from the UK, USA, Japan and Turkey.

She researched their foods, drew ideas, dragged Daddy down to the arts shop to buy the Fimo and got to work. We love her results and have borrowed her creations to stage our own international breakfasts!!
